Why Pray For Jon & Kate?

Since this campaign began, I've read so many variations of the question: why pray for Jon & Kate? The implication is that if someone is greedy, selfish, acting foolish, or simply is someone with whom you disagree, they do not deserve your prayers. When did prayers become currency to be begrudgingly given out to certain causes? Let's examine what the Bible says about prayers:







  • James 5:13 - "Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise."

  • Philippians 4:6 - "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."

  • Philippians 1:9 - "And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight..."

  • Romans 12:12 - "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer."
This couple, like every married couple, is going through trials and tribulations. Some may say they've made poor choices. Some may say the Gosselins are coordinating an orchestrated business plan. Actually, we don't really know and what does it matter? These are two people...who are married...and who have children. That's at least 3 reasons to pray for them.

To help you, I've provided some Scripture and focal points to assist your prayers, however, your prayer time with God is between you and God. So, pray as you are led.

Day 1 - Ephesians 5:22 - "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord."
Lord God, please allow Kate to set aside herself and her own needs and encourage Jon to lead their household.

Day 2 - 1 Corinthians 7:3 - "The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband."
Father, I pray that Jon will be renewed in his commitment to his marriage and participate in every aspect of that covenant.

Day 3 - Colossians 3:20 - "Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord."
Yahweh, may all of the Gosselin children listen to and obey their parents. Please protect these children from any harm.

Day 4 - Titus 2:7 - "In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness."
Lord, allow the Gosselins to experience your grace and mercy everyday and in so be an example of You unto others.

Day 5 - Colossians 3:18 - "Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord."
Father, may Kate not allow pride and emotions to overpower Jon.

Day 6 - Ephesians 5:23 - "For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior."
God, Jon is the leader of his family. Give him the discernment and wisdom to perform this task everyday in Your strength.

Day 7 - Proverbs 21:9 - "Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife."
Lord God, I pray that Jon & Kate seek Godly counsel to help heal their marriage.

Day 8 - 1 Corinthians 7:5 - "Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control."
Father God, I pray this couple finds a harmonious balance in their life and not allow worldly influences to distract them from family.

Day 9 - 1 Peter 3:7 - "Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers."
In the name of Jesus, I pray that Jon can see past his hurt and anger to reconnect with his wife in a deeper way.

Day 10 - Proverbs 21:19 - "Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered wife."
God, may Kate understand that words can push Jon into the desert.

Day 11 - Proverbs 31:10 - "A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies."
Lord God, I pray that Kate realizes her value in Your eyes...and that Jon can cherish her in a new and special way.

Day 12 - 1 Peter 3:2 - "...when they see the purity and reverence of your lives."
Father, may the media and the world see purity and reverence in the lives of the Gosselins. Not by our will but by Your Will may this be done.

Day 13 - Ephesians 5:25 - "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word," Father God, I pray that Jon will step up and love Kate in daring ways and grow closer to You in the process.

Day 14 - Proverbs 31:25 - "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come."
God, may Kate focus and rely on Your strength so that she can laugh at these days and the days to come.

Day 15 - Proverbs 27:15-16 - "A quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping on a rainy day; restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand."
Father God, it's so easy for Jon to give up and seemingly avoid wasting energy and time. I pray he sees with Your eyes what's around him.

Day 16 - Ephesians 5:27 - "...and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless."
Lord, may Kate allow Your love to shine through having made her pure.

Day 17 - Proverbs 31:26 - "She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue."
God, may every word that falls from Kate's mouth be uplifting.

Day 18 - Titus 2:8 - "...and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us."
Lord, may the Gosselins conduct their lives in such a manner as to bring glory unto You.

Day 19 - Colossians 3:21 - "Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged."
In the name of Jesus, I pray that the Gosselin 8 are encouraged by Jon on a daily basis.

Day 20 - 1 Corinthians 7:4 - "The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife."
Lord God, may Jon & Kate work through their hurts and anger to heal and love each other in a new way.

Day 21 - Ephesians 5:28 - "In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself."
God, may Jon love Kate as he loves his own flesh, needs, and wants.

Day 22 - Proverbs 31:27 - "She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:"
Father God, may the Gosselin household have Your peace.

Day 23 - Titus 2:6 - "Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled." Lord, please tame Jon's restless spirit. Refocus his energies to bring glory to You.

Day 24 - Ephesians 5:24 - "Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything."
Father God, grant wisdom to Jon & Kate to understand their beloved partnership afresh and anew.

Day 25 - Titus 2:4 - "Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children..."
Lord, my the Gosselin's marriage be renewed and be an example to young couples everywhere.

Day 26 - Proverbs 31:29 - "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all."
God, may Kate be considered noble and receive high praise from her family and others with the glory to You.

Day 27 - 1 Peter 3:3 - "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes."
Father, we pray that Jon & Kate will not focus on wordly riches but to allow Your beauty to shine from within.

Day 28 - Colossians 3:19 - "Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them."
Lord, encourage Jon and empower him to be supportive of Kate.

Day 29 - 1 Peter 3:1 - "Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives..."
God, may Kate's behavior - not her words - communicate more than her words.

Day 30 - Titus 2:5 - "...to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God."
Father God, may Your name be lifted on high!

Day 31 - 1 Peter 3:4 - "Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." God, we pray that Your love, grace, and mercy will be evident in the daily lives of Jon & Kate.

  2. Anonymous, thanks for sharing this link. This is the second time I've seen this article. This is a great read and it does pose some appropriate questions. Was it right for the Gosselins to undergo risky fertility treatments? Have we as Christians/fans ignored morally-significant issues surrounding infertility, reproductive technology, childbirth, and parenting?

    Those are good questions and ones that we should reflect upon. However, since those were decisions made in the past, the present contains a marriage crumbling under a variety of stresses.

    Any of us can be seduced by wealth and fame. I, nor you, should think we could respond differently if we were in the Gosselins' shoes.

    I agree, we do need to be more discerning, but we also need to pray more. That's the one thing missing from this article.

    I agree, we do need to look for role models who value self-sacrifice over material gain, practice forgiveness, heal broken relationships, take our marriage vows seriously, and encourage our Brothers and Sisters to do the same. Also, we need to ask deep questions about faith and life.

    Ultimately, we need to get real. Prayer can help with all of this since it can cut through the minutia of life and empower a person with wisdom and discernment.

    What does Isaiah 40:31 say? "but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

    I pray that Jon & Kate will refocus on that hope so that He can renew their strength.

    I happened to come by your blog after skimming through a few facebook comments on people.com. Thank you so much for your hard work in getting this site together and for praying for this family. Often I believe the Lord puts families like this in the spotlight to show the rest of us what is happening in families around the world. We, as children of the Most High, definitely need to be in prayer for families everywhere. Jon and Kate, while certainly needing the prayer, are being used right now by the Lord to show how similar this couple is to every one in our country. I really hope they take advantage of one of the many reasons that Christ died for us and let Him restore their family. I find myself and my husband very similar to Jon and Kate as well. We endured a season of infidelity and what I had to do as the betrayed was submit to my husband and give up my control (even in the midst of his sin), which was paramount to us being restored. This forced me to rely on the Lord, my true husband, rather than the earthly husband He gave me. We focused on each other rather than our children, and made the choice to have faith that if we did this, our children would be taken care of and our entire family would be restored. God honored this, as we are now able to fall in line regarding the way He set up the marriage covenant. That is why so many people fail in marriage today --- they simply have no knowledge as to how they are supposed to fall in line. It's still a day to day struggle for us, but we took advantage of the Lord's promises and placed our faith and focus where it really needs to be --- on Him, and not on each other or even our children. I know to many secular people this sounds absurd. I will pray for this family as well as thousands of others around the world. I hope that Jon and Kate fall upon this site. I will pray for that as well.

If you feel that way about Kate, pray the Lord softens her heart and shows her what's important in life. If you feel that way about Jon, pray he's empowered to be his family's leader.

I haven't seen a recent episode of the show and this blog isn't about promoting its watching...but praying for this couple and strengthening marriages.

  11. Can't you find better things to create a website re: praying for a cause? How about our troops overseas, the many hungry and starving people in this world, world peace, the sick, the handicapped, the non-believers, the unemployed etc, etc, etc.

    Create a website for Jon and Kate (as loving Christians) to donate some of the millions to these causes instead of buying new cars, homes, plastic surgery, clothing, jewelry, etc.

    God answered their prayers now they need to give back - and not with TLC money.

    Stop this show, Jon and Kate, and try and repair your torn-apart family with the help of the Lord. I didn't notice that one of your vacations was to the Holy Land or any such place!

  12. Anonymous, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I wrote my first two posts on my personal blog and created this blog because I was led and compelled to do so. I'm neither led nor compelled to create a blog on the other worthy topics you mentioned. However, sense you mentioned them, perhaps you are and should create one or more.

    Indeed, it's likely the show needs to conclude but I say it should end because of and in the Lord's timing. Not because of our own thoughts, concerns, or what we think is best.

    As for what this family should or shouldn't do with their money and where they should travel, that's entirely up to them and they shouldn't be judged for it. We all make poor and impulsive choices when it comes to finances. However, through prayer and Godly discernment, we all can make wise choices.

  15. Thanks for your effort in putting this site together. I agree with you and am glad someone in cyberspace is willing to surround them in prayer. I have been asking lately, "where is the church in all of this...we were their biggest fans when it all started, why are we not helping them?" I hope more Christians will stand up for marriage and truth, regarding this family and others. We need to show mercy toward the Gosselins, not turn our backs when they're clearly in trouble. How many families do we worship with that are facing the same trouble..what are we doing to sharpen them? Let's also pray the money they've earned will be used for God's glory. What an amazing platform this family has been given...there is always hope for restoration, let's pray their hearts and motives for doing this show are pure.

  17. useyourpassion, many thanks for your kind words. Prayer is a powerful thing. First, it changes the one doing the praying. Then, if it's in God's plan, the prayer changes the one being prayed for. It's far too easy to turn your back on someone and feel betrayed or duped. A true test of character and integrity is to pray for wisdom and discernment, no only for ourselves but also for others.

  18. Rick, great idea for a blog. I am sure that you spend much of your prayer time on other worthy subjects, unlike what some other posters may think. Like you, I had a great desire to pray for this couple and their family as I watched the tabloids tear them down. (I am a researcher, like you.)Another worthy blog would be to protest tabloids; I just haven't found the time :) Thank you for the vid on Jon; it seemed very honest and informational.

    In response to anonymous, prior to your last post: Jeremiah 29:12, "and you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart." God is not elusive; He is not hiding in order to be found. Rather, He wants you to turn around and He is waiting there for you. Seek Him with your whole heart.

  21. Anonymous, thanks for dropping by. Neither this website nor I can save Jon & Kate. That's God's job. Jon & Kate have to be willing to change. Anyone has to be willing to deny self to allow God to change their focus. It's easier to be negative and sarcastic than to be positive and place your faith in God's saving power.

    Currently, multiple media outlets are riding the Jon/Kate coattail to promote gossip and other negative news. JonandKatePrayers.com is a challenge to focus on the positive, pray for this couple's marriage and family instead of gossiping about them, and perhaps empower one's marriage or faith. I have no interest to gain attention for myself. To God be the glory!

    I do pray that you'll know Jesus Christ's love for you. Colossians 2:2 says: "My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."

  28. WOW!!! Rick... thank God for you and your spirit! It is so refreshing to see you create this blog as a POSITIVE outlet and encouragement for the better good of Jon and Kate's marriage! I have been a fan for sometime now and have watched Satan work through so many avenues to tear this marriage and family apart and have felt so helpless as there is virtually no way of getting a hold of the Gosselins to tell them of what helped save my marriage. You see, I had tried 15 times to e-mail them, right around the time that the tabloids starting their drama, and so their e-mail box was full constantly. So when trying to find something positive for the family tonight I ran acrossed not only this blog site, but found several references to the movie, "Fireproof," and the book "The Love Dare." When my marriage was in the beginning stages of divorce, I was given both the book and the marriage and committed to them and God is the center of our marriage and my and my husband's life. All I wanted to do was figure out a way to send the book and movie to the Gosselin's as I know this would possibly be a way for God to move through them and draw them to a state of dependancy on Him and themselves. And, what a witness and testimony this would be to the world! Boy would they show all those tabloids out there..."Look World the Lord Reigns and another Marriage is Saved!!!" So I will commit to prayer for this family and again thank you for your humbleness and loving heart... God Bless...

  29. I still would like to recommend Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerich. Excellent book on men's greatest need being respect ( not necessarily love ) and the wife needing to be loved! It seems like Kate is unable to give Jon the respect he needs as head of their home---whether he "earns it" or not. It is a hard lesson for some women to learn---just as hard as it is for a man to realize his wife needs love. If one of those is missing---a disaster is sure to occur. Reading and APPLYING those principles helped to save my marriage and give God the glory! Jon and Kate maybe don't realize the spiritual component behind all this but it's main goal is to Steal, Kill & Destroy! I hope someone can get them this book or help Kate to realize what she is doing by not respecting Jon. She may just not be aware of how damaging it is and then it is harder for Jon to love her the way she needs to be treasured. Marriage is a tough road for any couple but with the added pressures they face with a very large family and all the public hoopla---if we are truly followers of Jesus Christ--and are led by Him to pray for this couple---then please do. I read Multiple Blessings and I believe that this couple is under an incredible amount of pressure now that the media is intent on making them out to be the same kind of couple that Hollywood is used to. They are not. I believe that their problems now are 90% media-infused. I will continue to pray for them and I don't believe everything I hear or read. They are struggling like everyone struggles, except their struggle has been made public. Everyone needs to stop judging and assuming and just pray.

  33. Anonymous, I was wondering when the first comment would come in reacting to today's news. You get the prize.

    While it's sad that it would appear this couple is getting divorced, prayers for them have not been for naught. God answers prayers in 1 of 3 ways: yes, no, and maybe/wait.

    You might conclude that God wanted Jon and Kate to get divorced. Malachi 2:16 says, "'I hate divorce,' says the Lord God of Israel."

    Jon and Kate had to willing be listen to the Holy Spirit, they had to be receptive of the intercessory prayers being lifted up on their behalf. Romans 8:26–27 says, "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express."

    Our prayers have been heard for this family and can continue to be heard for them if we are compelled to intercede on their behalf.

    Ephesians 4:32 says, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."

    I do, and so much more. J&K, however, must not believe this statement by the God of the universe.

    And so, I will say again... Pray for those children.

    While God is not at all surprised by these unfolding events... there are 8 children who are.

  35. Marriage is the joining of two to become one.
    Divorce is the pulling away of those two united, much like pulling away ones own skin from their body.

    The pain these two have inflicted upon these children will follow them for years and years.

    So what if I get the prize... there are children inthis who get NOTHING but hurt and confusion.
    Why is this a game to you???!!!!

    Again, pray for these children. They will suffer because of their parents refusal to obey. Jon and Kate may not, but THESE CHILDREN WILL SUFFER.

From your original comment, it appeared you were jeering at Baby Mama's comment and the purpose for this site which is to uplift this couple and their children. My challenge and encouragement has always been to pray for this couple's marriage and the healing of the family as a whole. Even through separation or divorce, Jon & Kate can still be interceded for but the children certainly need prayers of comfort and protection. Even more so, since there could be 8 different reactions to processing this change.

    I hope not, but one has to wonder.
    Only you can answer that truthfully.

    I see so much that's wrong here until I can't hardly begin to speak civilly. I was the one who brought the Christianity Today article to your attention. I was the one who questioned where your prayers were focused from the very beginning. All along you had this sort of "Did you see them do that?" "Did you hear them say this?" attitude until it turned my stomach.
    "Don't believe everything you hear."
    Remember saying that???!!!

    There are 8 children who did not choose this life for themselves. There are 8 children who are innocent of those exploting and manipulating things around them. J&K are both equally guilty. BUT those children did NOTHING!!!!!

    "Suffer" them to come to Christ. PRAY for them, as we should have been doing all along.

    I know how this affects all of us who believe God's guidelines for marriage and unity within the family.

    I was the "Candy Day of Magnolia, Texas" in the April 13th edition of People Magazine who admonished Jon to take control of his family and quit the belly aching of the life they chose for themselves. (I am a school librarian. We get People along with many other publications.)

    I know how it feels, as you do, to grieve for yet another couple of His who have chosen their own way. It hurts every Believer in a marriage who knows what it means to forgive. It hurts every Believer in a marriage who knows that being right is not the end. It hurts every Believer who has had to look over at the other person and say, "I forgive you. Forgive me."

    We want the same thing, you and I.

The motivation for this blog and its content has been and continues to be discouraging gossip about this couple, praying for Jon & Kate Gosselin - individually and as a couple, praying for their children, and providing resources for strengthening marriages.

    This effort has never been about drawing attention to me.

    I'm uncertain what you see "wrong here" and why you questioned where my prayers were focused. If this ties back to the article you shared, as I stated previously, we as Christians do need to be more discerning. We also need to pray more.

    1 Timothy 2:1 says, "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone."

    Jon & Kate are no less deserving of prayers of healing and protection than their 8 children. If this couple is too blinded by their own emotions and selfishness and have lost their way, I pray that they return to God's loving arms. Indeed, their 8 children have and will continue to need our prayers and His love, grace, and mercies.

    I disagree with your assessment of my attitude, and I did say don't believe everything read. Many voices have been focused on destroying this couple, spreading rumors and gossip about them, and making a mockery of this family.

    Philippians 4:6–7 says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

  41. Prayers at this point will not help Jon and Kate. Kate failed to listen to Jon, he no longer wanted to do the show but she is enjoying the money and fame too much. If she wants to salvage what she has left of her marriage she needs to end the show and go off the radar for several years to repair her family.

  42. Anonymous, thanks for sharing your thoughts here. I respectfully disagree. Some people have prayed for years for someone to accept Christ. Prayer isn't always a one-stop-shop. Ultimately, it's about how you are led. If you are led and compelled to pray for this couple to reconcile, to heal their marriage, and their family - do so without regret or hesitation. Ultimately, the goal is that God be glorified. He can heal this marriage but only if they will lay this show and what comes with it on the altar. God may smash it to bits or He might change it...but in the end, the family would be together and their focus would be on Him.

    Indeed, there is a long road ahead of healing...

  43. Rick. Thank you for this site. I have been so saddened by all the negative media attention the Gosselin family has been getting. Coming upon your site that just wants to lift this family up to God has been very heartening. Also, just because the media says their heading for divorce doesn't mean that God still can't work in their hearts and lives. Even if those of us who pray don't seem to see any positive change, our time in prayer will draw us closer to God.

  46. Indeed, Candy. I pray that they are shielded from as much confusion and anger as possible while healing through this. One if not more will likely feel they are to blame and I pray that they are shown unconditional love from whatever source God sees fit. Most of all, I pray that in the years to come, they will know the unconditional love of Jesus Christ and will keep Him as a strong foundation.

  47. It is so easy to judge and focus on the negative, the media makes it so easy. I don't think Jon & Kate are bad people, just off track. Lets not forget Our God is a God of miracles and he can use this mess for His glory. I pray that someday that we will have a big announcement show on how this marriage was restored. Let us pray that they will experience the love of Christ and learn to follow in His way. Keep Praying.

If praying actually does something other than making you feel better about the type of person you are, maybe you should direct your prayers to the starving children in third world countries, the millions being killed globally from HIV, the Millions of people suffering from cancer, and possibly maybe even for the economy and the thousands of people who are being kicked out of their homes because they can't pay their mortgage. I'm just saying that there are more important issues than a bunch of spotlight hogging idiots... Jesus would not be happy that you are wasting worshipping idols.

    Nobody is saying we shouldn't pray for the kids.
    You sound as if you are saying because Jon and Kate made mistakes, they don't deserve to be prayed for as much. Did you forget they are children of God, just like you and I are? Who doesn't need prayers? Who hadn't made mistakes in their lives?
    Pardon me, but I dare say if you or I were put in the same situations, we would probably make some mistakes too, maybe some of the same ones.
    Pardon me again, but I feel you are making them sound less than you.
    They don't deserve our prayers less because they are "guilty;"
    their kids don't deserve our prayers more because they are "innocent."
    We should pray for them because they are people, just like you and I are. I don't know what else is needed.

Am I to assume you are Candy and disagree with the previous response(s) to your post(s)? Regardless, if you are going to refer to someone as a homewrecker and hypocrite in an open forum 9 months later, it would appear there's a personal matter needing prayer?
